NLOI Signing Day on deck
◊ How can last year's signing day top this one? Well, it can't. There really is no Terrelle Pryor-like player out there in 2009, wavering for the sake of publicity. Yes, this could be the most boring National Letter of Intent Signing Day ever.
However, that doesn't mean tomorrow isn't important for the Penn State football program's future. Sure, Penn State has a great class going so far, with the final numbers expected to be around 26 incoming freshmen. Some of them, like Kevin Newsome, have already enrolled. So there's no debate that many will sign as expected.
But what about last year, when Michael Shaw unexpectedly backed out of his PSU commitment, and signed with Michigan on signing day? I'm not sure Penn State has to worry about that this year.
Coming off 2007, Michigan was (even with the App St. loss) a stable program, with a hot new coach coming in to elevate the program to new heights. Penn State was coming off a disappointing 9-4 season, after being tabbed as dark-horse MNC contenders behind Ohio State.
Now look at this year. Penn State is the hottest team in the BigTen, and is favored to win the conference crown yet again. The program is up, and continues to go up. Penn State has seemingly weathered the storm that was 2000-2004, and its residual effects in 2006 and 2007. The Nittany Lions are no longer "rebuilding" after a championship run. Now, they're "reloading" once again.
