Looking at the new football roster
ZN's 2009 Penn State Football Preview - Personnel
◊ Penn State has released its official spring 2009 football roster. First off, let's give a big old HT to BSD. Now, let's look at some of the more interesting things about the new roster, mainly, who's sporting new numerals.
Chaz Powell: Old number - 12, New number - 2
The coaching staff wasn't kidding when they said they were going to use Powell like the next Derrick Williams.
Navorro Bowman: Old number - 18, New number - 11
This can't be a coincidence. Bowman is the most physically gifted backer since LaVar. Is an early NFL entry coming, too?
Other switches to note:
Brandon Beachum: Old number - 25, New number - 3
Cedric Jeffries: Old number - 29, New number - 7
Nick Sukay: Old number - 26, New number - 10
Mark Wedderburn:Old number - 86, New number - 13
DeOn'tae Pannell: Old number - 75, New number - 50
Chris Colasanti: Old number - 53, New number 48
Greyshirts (enrolled this spring):
Gerald Hodges: Number 6
Kevin Newsome: Number 12 - Is this number turning into the offensive equivalent of #31? Too early to tell, but fun to consider.
Anthony Fera: Number 29
Ty Howle: Number 53
Also to note, Penn State now has two more quarterbacks. John Kelly (#15) from Frederick, MD, and Shane McGregor (#16) from Ebensburg, PA. Both are listed on their bio pages as redshirt freshmen.
Also also to note, just because it doesn't really mean anything, but is always worth the 10 minute argument, Galen Hall is listed as Asst. Coach, Offense/Running Backs, and Jay Paterno is listed as Asst. Coach, Quarterbacks.

I think it would be great if we could build a tradition of great dual-threat quarterbacks, centering around the numbers 12 and 17. With his athletic ability, Kevin Newsome could potentially become another Michael Robinson. I hope Paul Jones takes 17 after Darryl Clark leaves to continue what could be a new tradition.
since i couldn't wear my sean lee jersey in 08 i bought a custom 53 jersey for chris colasanti because he was one of two true freshman to play in 07 (the other was wisniewski). colasanti was a bit of a disappointment in 08, mainly playing on special teams so i'm actually kinda glad that howle took over 53 because now i can sport my 45 in 09 and then switch back to 53 in 10 when howle will hopefully be starting at center.
