ZN's CFB Top 25 :: Week 8 2009

It's week number eight, and I still don't know how good are most of the teams out there. A few top-10 slots opened up, but it's possible there aren't any teams truly worthy of filling those vacancies.

Top 25 below the fold.

Rank. Team (LW), [Record, LW Result].

1. Alabama (1), [7-0, W 20 - 6 South Carolina]
2. Florida (2), [6-0, W 23 - 20 Arkansas]

10. Georgia Tech (19), [5-1, W 28 - 23 Virginia Tech]
11. Oregon (14), [5-1, DNP]
12. Southern Cal (18), [5-1, W 34 - 27 Notre Dame]

16. Virginia Tech (8), [5-2, L 28 - 23 Georgia Tech]
17. South Carolina (13), [5-2, L 20 - 6 Alabama]
18. Michigan (22), [5-2, W 63 - 6 Delaware State]
19. West Virginia (25), [6-1, W 24 - 7 Marshall]
20. Louisiana State (21), [5-1, DNP]

22. Pittsburgh (NR), [6-1, W 24 - 17 Rutgers]
23. Mississippi (NR), [4-2, W 48 - 13 UAB]
24. Wisconsin (20), [5-2, L 20-10 Iowa]
25. Notre Dame (23), [4-2, L 34 - 27 Southern Cal]

Dropped Out:
Kansas (15), [5-1, L 34 - 30 Colorado]
Nebraska (17), [4-2, L 31 - 10 Texas Tech]
Auburn (24), [5-2, L 21 - 14 Kentucky]

On the Cusp:
Oklahoma State (NR), [5-1, W 33 - 17 Missouri]
Houston (NR), [5-1, W 44 - 16 Tulane]
Utah (NR), [5-1, W 35 - 15 UNLV]
Central Michigan (NR), [6-1, W 34 - 23 W. Michigan]
Oregon State (NR), [5-2, W 38 - 28 Stanford]

Notes: This is becoming painful. The only team remotely worthy of the No. 1 spot is Alabama, but that's only because most everyone else is sucking. I wasn't a big believer in Iowa, until the Hawkeyes beat Wisconsin in Madison this week. The schedule sets up for Iowa to finish big, real big. A couple teams, like Miami, Penn State and TCU return to the top-10 this week. Again, though, I'm not sold on any as legit national title contenders. Georgia Tech's win over Virginia Tech looked better on the scoreboard than on the TV, but it was a convincing victory over a top-10 opponent. The only other teams really worth mentioning are USC and Ohio State. The Trojans allowed Notre Dame to storm back, and come within two plays of overtime. The Buckeyes, well, let's just say there are bigger problems with that team than just Terrelle Pryor. But, he's a start.
