'Told you so' of the week

Every once in a while, I like to gloat about something so insignificant, it hardly makes sense to even bring it up. Well, here's one for today.

I can't believe I missed this. On Thursday, I predicted Penn State would allow six points to Temple.

Temple scored only six points two days later. Damn, I'm good.

OSU, West Coast style

It's official, the Oregon State Beavers will come to Beaver Stadium for the second game in 2008. It's too bad Penn State can't get that damn Coastal Carolina game off the slate. Shit, even a Arkansas State would have been better. C'mon Tim Curley, grow a set.

Lucky?

Well, once in a while, I like to rub it in people's faces when I make an accurate prediction. This week, I was pretty damn close. Not only did I come within 4 points of PSU's score, but I wrote that PSU would score 13 points in the first half. Not only that, but I also said they would all come in the second quarter, unanswered by Iowa. Now, I know I said Iowa would score, but I was still pretty close, missing by only 6 points.

ZN's Prediction: PSU 23, UI 13
Actual Score: PSU 27, UI 7

Not bad, if you ask me.

ZN Top 25: Week 5

This week was one of the craziest I've ever seen. So, most of the teams ranked this week lost at least one game. The teams in the top-10 (other than LSU and USC) only got there because so many other teams choked. It was a fun Saturday in college football!

1. LSU (LW: 2) Even the No. 1 team in the nation, against Tulane had trouble Saturday.
2. USC (3) UW aaaalmost had this one; if the overruled pick in the EZ was good, USC might have fallen.
3. Ohio State (7) The Bucks are looking much better, but still, it was against the worst team in the Big Ten.
4. California (6) Now that was impressive; I pegged UO to win, but the Bears won a classic.
5. Wisconsin (12) This is still a weird team; but a win against MSU is still worthy of this ranking.
6. USF (16) Ok, maybe this is too high, but who else could play this schedule? I called this upset.
7. Kentucky (18) Talk about shooting up the polls; the Cats went from riding bitch to the driver's seat in the SEC East.
8. Boston College (10) The Eagles didn't need to win big this week.
9. Florida (4) The QB draw can only work so many times; Tebow looked human again.
10. Oklahoma (1) A bitch slap for the ages; Buffs came better prepared.
11. Georgia (14) It could be Dogs vs. Cats for the East title.
12. Arizona State (22) I don't know why, but I have a good feeling about what the Devils are doing.
13. South Carolina (19) The Spurrier O is finally clicking; the MSU defense is still very good.
14. Purdue (25) There's a chance for a back-in conference title if the cards fall right.
15. West Virgina (5) This was no fluke; the 'Neers were ready for USF, and the better team won.
16. Cincinnati (24) It's early, but wouldn't it be interesting to see the Cats in the BCS?
17. Hawai'i (NR) Undefeated is undefeated; but it won't be that way at the end of the season.
18. Virginia Tech (21) I said the 'Heels would scare the Hokies; and that VT would pull away.
19. Oregon (8) This is a bit of a drop for the Ducks; but now it's about whether they can regroup.
20. Missouri (23) NU is ripe for the picking; the Tigers need a win to even think about a North title.
21. Kansas St. (NR) Could it be that KSU just out-moxied the 'Horns?
22. Rutgers (9) This was a bad loss at home; lucky for the Knights, it wasn't a conference game.
23. Texas (11) I said last week KSU would surprise; didn't think this much though; back to the drawing board.
24. Kansas (NR) It was either KU or Virginia here; I like the Jayhawks' offense, and the defense is always good.
25. Michigan State (17) Tough loss at Camp Randall; but I don't think this will mean a complete collapse like past seasons.

Dropped Out:
Clemson (13) Come on, the Tigers should have had this one no problem.
Penn State (15) This was the polar opposite of the 2006 win; in 2007, PSU made the crucial mistakes.
Alabama (20) Saban is no longer a diety; but the 'Tide can still make noise this year.

I KNEW IT!!!

I've been saying it for two weeks. Michigan QB Chad Henne might return for this week's match up with Penn State. Lloyd Carr is the master trickster. No one should have doubted he was up to something by starting Mallet against Notre Dame.

Carr knew ND wouldn't be any trouble, and didn't hesitate to start the true frosh in place of his senior QB. Well, at least PSU can practice with the knowledge Henne will line up under center. After all, this is scUM we're talking about.

I rest my case

While the latest fad is sweeping the college football web,CollegeFootballNews.com held a roundtable disscussion for national college football writers. Dennis Dodd of CBSsportsline.com was invited as one of the "experts" to weigh in on the questions. The roundtable took place on August 7.

Question: What one thing on the field would you change?

Dennis Dodd's answer: "Two things, sorry. More day games and less TV timeouts. When those new rules were instituted last year, TV didn't budge one inch. Therefore, we got less football instead of less commercials which make the games so long. Maybe I'm naive but to shave one 90 second break off a game doesn't seem like too much to ask."

Sound familiar? I guess that puts me on the same level as the "experts." See you all later for part two.
